Reform the PATRIOT Act
To: Rep. Jerry Lewis
September 23, 2009
Respected Representative,
I understand that the Obama Administration has expressed its desire for the renewal of the Patriot Act. Without a doubt the dangers that our nation has come to face over the past decade has required great change and great sacrifice both by our people and our government
While many of the changes implemented by the Patriot Act have undoubtedly protected our nation, I implore you to pause and reflect how fortunate we have been. Consider how small a percentage of our legislative body it would have taken to pervert the powers granted to the federal government by the Patriot Act in its current form.
In its current wording the only substantial checks and balances against abuse of power are the strict morals and good will of our representatives. Our basic civil liberties lay exposed to the elements' stripped bare of the armor of our Bill of Rights by an act perhaps a bit hastily written, proposed, and carried forth.
To date our weather has been fair. Our representatives honest in deed and earnest in their desire to place people and country first. Let us not be so foolish to leave ourselves to dangerously unprotected from abuse of federal power. Protect ourselves we must and will, but it would be criminal to do so at the cost of the very tenets which brought and has kept our nation together.
Thank you for your time and continued hard work.
