Renew the PATRIOT Act as is
To: Rep. Michael Castle
September 22, 2009
As a citizen who has followed the path and destruction of terrorism beginning the year I graduated high school, 1972, with the massacre of the Israeli athletes in Munich I always felt it was only a matter of time before we were attacked on our home soil. I say this because our citizens and military personnel were the main sources of attacks overseas.
I never felt our country was doing enough to tighten our security with our borders, airports, seaports, etc. and when the World Trade Tower was first attacked in 1993 I wasn't totally surprised. Obviously, nothing was done afterwards and 9/11 was not a shock either. I say that with much sadness and anger that so many innocent people had to lose their lives. Yet there was plenty of chatter by terrorists especially bin Laden about attacking us with planes loaded with jet fuel. As far as I am concerned Bill Clinton passed the buck to George Bush and I give President Bush credit for doing whatever his administration had to do to help keep us safe. I will state for the record the buck was passed to Bill Clinton too. On the otherhand his administration should have enacted a Patriot Act after '93 and started beefing up security here but instead he passed legislation that weakend our intelligence gathering capabilities. Why do the Democrats weaken our intelligence and Republicans strengthen it? Both parties should be unanimous in protecting our country, citizens and military here and abroad especially with the enemy we face today.
The Patriot Act should be left the way it is. Terrorists are patient and plan carefully. When it comes to wiretapping, eavesdropping, etc. there should be no legal wranglings when it comes to terrorists or suspected terrorists. This administration is already going soft on the enemy. If the Patriot Act gets watered down or eliminated it will only ensure we get attacked again. I am sure our enemy is watching us closely and cheering the steps the Obama Administration has already taken to make it more difficult for our intelligence agencies to obtain information that will save American lives here and abroad.
Leave the Patriot Act as it is. This should have been enacted at least 30 years ago.
