Health Insurance Mandate

September 20, 2009
Obama says a health insurance mandate is like an auto insurance mandate. It's not. Only liability auto insurance is required, to protect others against harm I may do to them. Health insurance does not protect anyone but myself. Whether I buy insurance to protect myself should be my choice. Auto insurance which protects against harm to myself is comprehensive and collision. Neither comprehensive nor collision is mandatory. Furthermore, states mandate liability insurance, not the federal government. For the Feds to make such a mandate violates states rights. Finally, not even liability auto insurance is ultimately required. I can simply not drive, regardless of how much money I make. There is no equivalent option with a health insurance mandate. A federal mandate is a backhanded tax increase. The government can tell me I have to pay more money to the I.R.S. and call it a tax (which is the proposal if I don't buy health insurance) or they can tell me I have to pay money to Anthem Blue Cross and call it "mandating that people get health insurance to share the cost burden fairly among all" (Obama, Sunday 9/20/2009). If the government is forcing money out of my pocket, there is no difference. It's a tax. And for the government to force us all to pay "to share the cost burden" is a redistribution of wealth. It's Socialism. The Founding Fathers must be rolling over in their graves.
