Don't Compromise on Health Care Reform
To: President Barack Obama

While there are many models for health care systems that can be referred to when reforming our own, I have little or no confidence in our ability to control costs without also including a Public Option in the mix. Germany may provide universal coverage without it, but it depends upon a diversity of small competing plans to do so. Do you really want to take on corporate giants like Aetna and United Healthcare in order to break them up into the many hundreds of smaller plans we would need to create the competitive environment of Germany? Nor do Health Cooperatives offer much hope. I managed one for three years myself, here in Washington DC for artists and others self-employed in the cultural arts community, and it was a losing battle against the corporate death spiral of ever increasing premiums until members had to drop off and go find work in Home Depot - in one actual case covered in the Washington Post (yes, she had been one of mine) - for the benefits.
