Subject:
Employment for people with Disabilities
To: Governor Bobby Jindal
Rep. James Morris
Sen. Sherri Cheek
August 28, 2009
I was born with a disability and despite being told that I would/should never walk. I have long surpassed that idea. I am currently unemployed and the problem is this. I have been on several job interviews and basically the only time I can ever get a job is if I know someone that works for that company.
I recently took a job and the day I interviewed the lady did not shake my hand so things worked out perfectly but once people in the office realized I had a disability they became distant and would not talk to me even regarding work questions. I was even asked about it by two of the other employees. They tried acting like it wasn't a big deal but with in a month I was terminated from employment. I was told that I have X amount of years of Accounts Payable experience I should be able to do the job with out training. I have worked several places since 1996 and each one has provided training.
I do not judge what someone can and can not do but yet every day I am faced with it. I interviewed a week later with a company and I have a limp so the lady says what is wrong with your foot. I said oh I have a prosthetic leg. Well you could tell she wasn't going to hire me. I knew what it was before I left out of there.
All though the American Disabilities Act was created with good intentions it is apparent that people still discriminate against people with disabilities.
I am still unemployed and unable to draw unemployment and find a job based on my disability. I need your help in finding a solution to this growing problem.
