19 CFR Part 177

To:
Rep. Frank LoBiondo

August 25, 2009

This letter is to register my opposition to the U.S. Customs' plan (19 CFR Part 177) to re-classify assisted openers and all folding knives as switchblades. This plan will make criminals of 35.6 million currently law-abiding Americans. The majority of people carrying and using one-hand-openers (which includes multi-tools) every day need them for their jobs. They use them to save lives. I was a firefighter/EMT for years so I have seen (and done) things that would not be possible if two hands were needed to use the tool. Please think about the practicality versus the "saving ourselves from ourselves" syndrome that is so prevalent in today's society. Think about it…a butcher knife that needs no opening versus a "switchblade" that must be opened in order to use. Which is really more dangerous? I respectfully thank you for your time. Feel free to contact me for any clarification on my point of view
