Support health care reform

I urge you to support the inclusion of a public health insurance option in health reform legislation. Privitization and weak regulation have enabled the medical providers and insurers to create our current, overly-expensive health care and insurance systems for their own financial benefits. The time has come for bold change. Public insurance plans would still have to compete with private insurers so there is no unfair advantage for public insurance over the private sector. Employers and employees would still preserve choice. Serious cost savings can arise from the creation of public plans. In New Jersey we created the School Employees Health Benefit Plan to compete with private insurers and HMO's. School districts across the state are now saving millions of dollars by switching into this public health insurance plan. School Board savings have therefore eliminated or lowered many tax increases and freed up funds for educational programs. Employee contributions and co-payments have been held steady, all without sacrificing the quality of, or access to, their health care of choice. Simply put, the larger the insurance risk pool, the more significant the savings. A public insurance option could help supply these savings and benefits to all Americans. Thank you considering these views and for you work on the behalf of your constituents.
