Health Care for All

To:
Governor Bobby Jindal
Sen. Daniel Martiny
Rep. Kirk Talbot

August 24, 2009

If we had waited for a perfect compromise, slavery would still exist and Medicare and Social Security would not. Affordable, accessible health care for all is long overdue. Finding a way to pay for it should be the focus--not fighting whether it should exist or not. Universal health care is moral and just. You must support, prioritize and find a way to pay for the public option better known as The American Plan.

Fueling fear among the elderly to keep the insurance gravy train from derailing is criminal callousness. Stoking anti-government sentiment and lying are despicable acts from desperate opponents. Rationing is a lie unless you are talking about what is going on now with corporate bureaucrats cherry-picking and denying. Snuffing out grandma is a lie. Saying we can't afford it is another lie.

Health care reform without a public option (The American Plan) is NO reform at all. 3 of my adult children are uninsurable. I am uninsurable (insured only because of my husband). As a hard-working professional, I resent the misconception that uninsured folks don't work or won't shell out for insurance. A couple of weeks ago stitches would have been nice for my 6-year-old grandson but we settled for butterfly band-aids instead. His professional, 2 wage-earner-family was newly relocated in a new state with new jobs and could not afford $2400 a month for Cobra. The American Plan would have taken care of him. One of my married college graduate sons wants to leave a $12 an hour job to start a family but can't because he needs the health insurance. The American Plan would take care of him. So many of my college students have no recourse and become sicker without care. The American Plan would change all of this. Many, many Americans are but 1 serious illness or job layoff away from financial ruin—even with health insurance. The American Plan would remedy this. And I could go on but you've probably stopped reading by now.

Examine your conscience and please do what is morally right for everyday Louisianians. Support universal health care with a public option.
