Violation of Free Speech in Baton Rouge

To:
Governor Bobby Jindal
Sen. Ben Nevers
Rep. Scott Simon
Rep. John Schroder

July 27, 2009

Last Wednesday, July 22, 2009, "Organizing for America" hosted a press conference in Baton Rouge to promote the President's health care plan. Outside, public citizens who showed up to speak out against the plan were told by a Baton Rouge police officer that they weren't allowed to talk to anyone on the sidewalk. People wearing ACORN t-shirts told the police officer to stop the people from talking to anyone, and he did. They were not even allowed to have a civil conversation with opposing viewpoints, even when the person they were speaking to said he was okay with the conversation and didn't need the police to intervene. The Baton Rouge police officer clearly violated our right of Free Speech and needs to face disciplinary action for this. Someone needs to speak out and protect our freedoms before they are taken away from us entirely. This offense cannot go unpunnished, and groups, such as ACORN, such not have the right to order the police around to do their bidding and stop any opposition to their plans.
