Subject:
S. 21 Prevention First

Dear Senator Warner,
I urge you to rework or else vote against S. 21 Prevention First. I am opposed to forcing insurers to cover benefits for prescription contraceptive drugs or devices and benefits for outpatient contraceptive services (715.a). Also, the assertion that "emergency contraception does not cause abortion" is debatable. In any case, those who would be concerned about the immorality of abortion would also be concerned about the immorality of preventing a fertilized embryo from implanting, i.e. you are denying life to a human being, even if you do not call this an abortion (402.b). Finally, flatly calling emergency contraception "safe" is an overstatement if you care at all about women. The drug's own documentation warns that it may cause nausea, vomiting, headaches, fatigue, dizziness, lower abdominal pain, tenderness in breasts . . . . That is not my idea of safety.
