FYI- MANUSCRIPT ABOUT NEW YORK AND LONG ISLAND RAILROAD COMMUTERS
To: Rep. Carolyn McCarthy
June 8, 2005
Hello...
My name is Janna Herbison, and I am a wife and mother from Tennessee, who is also a former television news reporter and former Democratic Press Secretary for the TN Legislature. I have recently written a book entitled "Southern in the City" - a manuscript about my experiences in Manhattan/New York over 20 years as a Southerner.
One of my chapters is entitled "To Long Island and Back." It is a chapter about my travels to and from the city in 2000-2001 from Islip, NY on the Long Island RR Commuter train to Penn Station/Manhattan when I almost moved to the City and was interviewing for jobs. The main focus of the chapter is how amazing and helpful the people on the train were to me during my trips. The commuters went out of their way to assist me in so many ways and it wasn't until I saw a movie about the 1993 shootings that I realized why. I have dedicated a part of this book to what happened and to my respect for the Long Island commuters and what they went through. I, of course, am in the process of publishing, but thought Rep. McCarthy would possibly be interested in this book. It basically states that Southern stereotypes about "New Yorkers" are usually not true, and that I had a most enlightening experience getting to interact with these wonderful people.
Thank you very much for reviewing this, and and if Rep. McCarthy is interested in the book, please let me know and I will be more than happy to send her a copy. I would very much appreciate her input and guidance for this project, which I believe will be very worthwhile for both New Yorkers and Southerners in the near future.
Thank you very much, JH
