Subject:
Students for Concealed Carry on Campus
To: Sen. Robert Casey
Rep. Charles Dent

November 3, 2009
As an adult student returning to the academic world, I can say that the Maine State Legislature regarding concealed carry concerns me as it is illogical and unnecessary.
I am OIF Veteran awaiting my Honorable Discharge from the Marine Corps. When choosing a college to attend, a State's stance on 2nd Amendment rights did play a role in where I chose to go to school. I am currently enrolled at a college in Maine that has an excellent program for my field of study and Maine in general has very reasonable and safe laws governing the sale and carry of firearms. An exception being the statewide ban on concealed carry on campus. Maine is not alone in this regard. There is however, a growing trend among states to acknowledge a person's right to safety. Texas and South Carolina are just two states changing their thoughts on concealed carry on campus. As someone who has friends involved a narrowly averted school shooting and has spoken with students from a campus where one took place, this is a very real concern of mine and it should be a concern of yours as well.
By obtaining a CFP you are proving to the Maine State Police that you are a law-abiding, sane individual, who can safely conceal carry a firearm. Why then strip someone, who has already satisfied all state requirements, of their personal right to safety? Criminals by definition do not follow the law. By allowing laws to be in place that mitigate an individual's ability to protect themselves, you are creating new generations of victims.
