GAO Rules on Tanker Contract

Last week the Government Accountability Office upheld a protest from the Boeing corporation over the Air Force's decision to award the refueling tanker contract to Northrup Grumman and Airbus, Northrup's European partner. The GAO listed the failure to state the relative merits of each proposal as one of "a number of significant errors" in the Air Force's decision.

That decision prompted protests from some in Congress, particularly due to the fact that part of the aircraft would be made outside the United States. The Air Force is reviewing the GAO decision and will decide what to do in 60 days. Congress could decide to block funding for the deal or force a new competition.
